A 4 star read
Jack Glennison is a former police officer turned private detective in the 1920s. A young woman hires him to find her husband, who has been missing for just a short period of time. The case seems weird from the beginning on, and Jack soon finds himself on a boat to the small island of Darkisle. Here he gets caught up in a mysterious book auction and the overall oddness of the atmosphere on Darkisle. Let’s also not forget about an ancient cult that won’t stop at anything to get what they desire.
The Gathering of Shadows by Mark N Drake is a truly entertaining read. It’s a 1920’s detective story that delves into the Lovecraftian realm. Yet, it seems like a truly original novel, and not a mere copy of H.P. Lovecraft’s work.
The “good” characters were really likeable, especially Jack and his soon to be “partner”. Their relationship was very natural. Drake also did a marvelous job with his villain, and truly kept me in the dark who the bad guy was until the end.
The only negative thing I would like to point out is that I had a hard time keeping some characters apart at times. Other than that, it was a solid read.
