A 4 star read

My summary:

The Roots Have Dug Into My Heart is a heartbreaking horror novella that shows just how far a mother will go to rescue her lost child.

After a horrible relationship and drug problems, Jessie Milano moves back to her hometown in Northern California to live with her mother. Her mother does not agree with Jessie’s life choices and the way she takes care of her 3 year old daughter Maya. One morning, after a long night of drinking and cocaine, Jessie oversleeps. When she awakens she finds her daughter gone. After she finally finds her, she realizes something isn’t right with her precious little daughter.

My review:

I’ve always taken a liking to supernatural horror that have elements of folklore in them. In that aspect, Peter Fugazzotto’s novella certainly does not disappoint. This being my first time reading his works, I can’t say for sure how his other works compare to this one. But what I have found is that he has a knack for writing a dark and compelling story with a heavy topic matter.

His protagonist, Jessie, was not a character you will take a liking to. She is too selfish and focused on herself to realize how much her young daughter really needs her. The entire atmosphere of the novella was dreary and high on emotions. Very fitting.

Thanks to the author for the review copy!
